Yankees trade outfielder Mike Tauchman to San Francisco Giants for reliever Wandy Peralta

BALTIMORE — Minutes after he left the field at Camden Yards Tuesday, Mike Tauchman was no longer a Yankee. The struggling outfielder was dealt to the Giants for left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta, a Giants source confirmed.

Peralta, 29, comes with a 5.40 ERA in 8.1 innings pitched over 10 appearances this season. He’s struck out eight and walked three.

“Wandy’s secondary stuff plays better than his fastball. He’s got velocity so that helps, but command of it just fair though,” a National League scout said of Peralta. “Little bit of a rubber arm.”

Over six Major League seasons with the Reds (2016-19) and Giants (2019-21), Peralta has gone 9-9 with two saves and a 4.72 ERA in 220 relief appearances.

In 2020, the left-handed pitcher went 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 25 relief outings, holding left-handed batters to a .171 batting average against with 12 Ks. He struck out at least one batter in 19 of his 25 games, averaging 8.23 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

The Giants have been high on Tauchman since this winter, talking to the Yankees several times about this deal.

“The price finally fell on (Tauchman),” a Giants source said.

Tauchman’s stock had skyrocketed in 2019, when he got a chance to play regularly with the Yankees. He slashed .277/361/.504 with a career-high 13 homers. That stock sunk a little after a terrible 2020 and he became expendable this year with a slow start and a crowded outfield.

For now, at least, that means Tyler Wade is added to the Yankees bench.

“Obviously, Wade brings the speed element, maybe even more so than Mike, with just raw speed,” Boone said of the change to his bench. “Wade gives us that defensive flexibility, in the infield and the outfield.

“We’re excited about Peralta,” Boone added. “We think he can be an important member of our bullpen. So we’ll just see, we’ll see how the days unfold and how we start to integrate him (to the bullpen) and, how it changes a little bit some of the things I do on the bench.”

Peralta is not expected for Wednesday’s game, Boone said he would be traveling.

Aaron Judge is dealing with soreness in his “lower body” from playing every day and traveling. He was removed In the ninth inning of the Yankees 5-1 win over the Orioles. The slugger will get a day off in the next few days, Aaron Boone said.

The Yankee manager would not pinpoint what specific part of the body Judge is feeling soreness.

“I think it’s more just lower body stuff from just kind of the travel, eight days in a row,” Boone said. “Obviously, he’s been on the bases a lot and running around a lot. So just trying to get where I can get him off his feet, but probably need to give him one of these next couple (days).”

Boone was asked if Judge’s “lower body stuff” refers to feet, knees, hamstring, etc.

“Probably a little bit of all of it. I think he’s just a little beat up on the trip,” Boone said. “He’s been out there a lot.”

That included a head-first slide into third base on an ill-advised attempt to stretch from first to third in Monday night’s loss.

Judge has missed just two of the Yankees 23 games this season. He sat out those two earlier in the year with what the Yankees said was a sore left side.

A long history of injury issues has plagued the 29-year old during his previous five years in the big leagues.
