When will River Plate vs Boca Juniors take place following match suspension?

The Superclasico derby game and Copa Libertadores 2018 final was postponed following an attack on the Boca team bus by River fans on Saturday

The second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between River Plate and Boca Juniors has been rescheduled for December 9 in Madrid following two dramatic postponements over the weekend.

The match was due to take place at 5pm local time (8pm UK, 3pm US ET) on Sunday after River fans attacked the Boca team bus as the visiting squad headed across Buenos Aires for the Superclasico derby encounter at El Monumental the previous day.

Several players were left injured following the prolonged assault, which saw projectiles used to smash windows and tear gas released by police attempting to disperse the culprits.

The game was originally scheduled to take place at 5pm local time on Saturday, and was delayed on several occasions before officially being moved forward 24 hours.

After CONMEBOL requested that the game take place outside of Argentina, it has now been confirmed for December 9 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm GMT/2:30pm ET.

However, River Plate have rejected the decision and insisted the game should be played in Argentina, while Boca have demanded being given the title.

If the game goes ahead in Spain, fans of both River and Boca will be allowed into Real Madrid’s stadium. Boca drew 2-2 with their great rivals in the first leg at La Bombonera.

Due to the G20 political summit being held in Buenos Aires this weekend, it was impossible to hold the game the following weekend due to a lack of available security to protect players from similar violent scenes.

“It is a shame that we are in a situation like this because of some misfits,” CONMEBOL chairman Alejandro Dominguez told Fox Sports. “The image that has been sent to the world is the wrong one, this is not the football that we want.

“The conditions are not equal, given there is a team that was attacked. When the teams of each club enter the field, we want there to be equal conditions. We want to see a show.

“We believe that we must send a signal that there are no excuses. Let the team who scores more goals on the pitch win. The board of CONMEBOL has taken the decision that there is no equality in the current conditions.

“We have to provide the conditions so that both clubs have the ideal conditions for the final to be played. We will meet with the presidents of Boca and River in Asuncion to find a date and play this game.”

Goal will be streaming the match live from Madrid, as well as providing English-language text commentary of the second leg clash.

CONMEBOL officials initially refused to call off the game, despite several Boca players reportedly having to be taken to hospital for treatment, before they ultimately reversed their call.

Boca player Carlos Tevez slammed officials, stating that CONMEBOL had been virtually “forcing” the side to play despite their wounds, further claiming that the governing body would have given preferential treatment to River if the situation had been reversed.

“Pablo Perez was in the hospital and they were forcing us to play,” the former Manchester United man said. “There were two Boca players in the hospital, another one vomiting, I was vomiting too, everyone sneezing.”

The winner of the Copa Libertadores final will qualify for the Club World Cup which takes place from December 12-22, which will feature Champions League winners Real Madrid as favourites.

Japan’s Kashima Antlers, Tunisia’s Esperance, Mexico’s Chivas and New Zealand’s Team Wellington also qualify as continental champions, while UAE’s Al-Ain make up the numbers as hosts.
