President Donald Trump said today that he hopes to work out a “fair trade deal” with the European Union, but stopped short of saying he would remove steel and aluminum tariffs that have exacerbated trade tensions between the two long-time allies.

“We want to have a fair trade deal [with the EU] and we’re looking to have a fair trade deal and hopefully we can work something out,” Trump told reporters at the White House ahead of his meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. “We just want it to be a level playing field for our farmers, for our manufacturers and everybody. And we also want, frankly, a big beneficiary to be the European Union.”

Trade relations between the U.S. and EU have been frayed by the steel and aluminum tariffs and Trump’s threat to impose additional tariffs on autos. Juncker noted the long-time relationship between the United States and the EU and called for action to de-escalate trade tensions.

“We are close partners, allies — not enemies. We have to work together,” Juncker said, sitting alongside Trump. “I think we need to talk each to the other, and not at each other. That’s what we [should] do today. I would think we should focus on reducing tariffs, instead of increasing them.”

Trump said he agreed with that point and said the United States “would be extremely pleased” if there were no tariffs, subsidies or other barriers that interfered with trade between the two huge economies.
