Today’s Hoda Kotb Will Make Significantly Less Money Than Matt Lauer

We were obviously super excited when longtime Today veteran Hoda Kotb was announced as Matt Lauer’s replacement to join Savannah Guthrie as a co-host on the beloved NBC show after Lauer was fired for alleged inappropriate sexual behavior.

The move is historic considering it marks the first time the Today show will have two women as co-hosts, but then we learned about Kotb’s salary. According to Page Six, Kotb will earn a $7 million per year salary, meaning she would get paid $18 million less than Lauer, who was taking home a whopping $25 million a year. Guthrie is reportedly also getting $7 million per year.

According to a show insider that spoke to Page Six, Kotb is content with her pay. “Hoda isn’t complaining about the money. She has landed the big job she always dreamed of, and most definitely deserves. Plus, Matt’s salary reflected the long time he was on the show—25 years. If things go well, Hoda could ask for more next time if she re-ups her contract. But the figures underline the huge wage disparity at NBC News.”

Considering Hoda is, for now, hosting both the 7 to 9 a.m. slot and the 10 a.m. slot with Kathie Lee Gifford—it remains unclear whether she’ll leave Gifford—we certainly hope she rakes in more cash. Megyn Kelly reportedly earns $20 million for hosting the 9 a.m. hour.

Kotb told E! News that Lauer congratulated her after hearing the news. “He was sweet this morning. Certain texts popped up, and there was one from Matt: ‘Congratulations!’” she said. “And he said some nice words.”

She added, “It meant the world to me to hear from him … It was really nice.”
