On the agenda: Juncker’s travels, money for disaster-hit areas, call for tech giants to do more.

Lithuanian independence: European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker is traveling to Lithuania today to take part in a commemoration marking 100 years since the signing of the Baltic country’s act of independence. Juncker is “honored and moved” to participate, Commission chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas said.

EU Solidarity Fund: The Commission has pledged to give money to Portugal, Spain, France and Greece to benefit from the EU Solidarity Fund, Regional Policy Commissioner Corina Creţu told reporters at a press conference just before the midday briefing. The €104 million will be given to Spain and Portugal to deal with the aftermath of forest fires, the French regions of Saint-Martin and Guadeloupe will also get money (after being hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria) and so will the Greek island of Lesbos, which was affected by an earthquake in summer 2017.

Consumer rules: The European Commission and member countries’ consumer authorities urge tech companies such as Google, Twitter and Facebook to do more to respond to requests made last year to align their terms of service with EU consumer protection rules. “We found that these companies fulfill requirements only partially,” Schinas said.
