Today at Commission: Juncker’s dinners and Avramopoulos
The commissioner for migration has been implicated in a corruption investigation in Greece.
On the agenda: European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will be in Berlin Thursday night for a dinner with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Commission chief spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said the meeting was part of Juncker’s drive to meet all EU leaders. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković is up next week, and Schinas said the president is in touch with the Netherlands’ Mark Rutte and Italy’s Paolo Gentiloni as well.
Schinas also discussed preparations for an informal leaders’ summit in Brussels on February 23.
Environment: The Commission announced a funding package of €98.2 million for the LIFE program — which supports environmental, nature conservation and climate action projects — focusing on “nature, water, air, waste, and climate action” in eight EU countries. Also, nine EU countries have until Friday to convince the Commission not to pursue infringement proceedings against them for falling behind on their environmental obligations.
Brexit: The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier will brief the press Friday on the latest developments in the Brexit negotiations at 12:30 p.m.
The Commission did not talk about: The European Medicines Agency, a topic that has been discussed “ad nauseam,” according to the Commission. Schinas also did not confirm if visa liberalization was discussed at a recent meeting between the Commission’s First Vice President Frans Timmermans and the Turkish ambassador to the EU. The two parties are discussing an “array of issues,” Schinas said.
Avramopoulos: The EU’s migration chief Dimitris Avramopoulos has been implicated in a corruption investigation in his native Greece over allegations that pharmaceutical giant Novartis bribed senior officials to price-fix its drugs during his time as health minister. Avramopoulos denied the charges, saying they were made by “sick minds.”
Asked for comment, Schinas said: “The Commission has nothing more to add to the commissioner’s statements.” Asked if Juncker was following the investigation, Schinas said the president “is following all these matters very closely and he is in touch with all his commissioners.”
