St. Cloud State’s Poster and Goergen win Regional titles

St. Cloud State University’s Clint Poster and Austin Goergen both brought home weight bracket championships from the 2015 NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional tournament, which wrapped up at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn. on Sunday, March 1.

Poster scored first place honors at 157-pounds thanks to a 1-0 victory over Derrick Weller of Lindenwood in the title bout. The victory improved Poster’s overall record to 36-0 in 2014-15. Poster started his day on March 1 with a 1-0 victory over Greg Hegarty of Maryville in the semifinal bout.

At 285-pounds, Goergen scored a 1-0 decision victory over Southwest Minnesota State’s Cole Wilson to win the regional title. Goergen opened his day on March 1 with a pin at 4:44 against Minnesota State’s Malcom Allen. On the season, Goergen is 30-1 and paces the Huskies with 15 pins.

As a team, SCSU placed second at the regional tournament behind Maryville University. The Huskies compiled 109.0 points, while Maryville won the meet with 114.0 points.

Both Poster and Goergen will now advance to the 2015 NCAA Division II championships, which will be held in St. Louis, Mo. on March 13-14. The pair will be joined at the championships by SCSU’s Tim Prescott (125-pounds), Mike Rhone (133-pounds), Larry Bomstad (149-pounds) and Gabe Fogarty (165-pounds).

Prescott placed third at 125-pounds with a 5-4 win over Garrett Evans of Ouachita Baptist. Rhone placed fourth at 133-pounds for the Huskies and Bomstad also placed fourth at 149-pounds. At 165-pounds, Gabe Fogarty placed second at the tournament. In the championship bout, Fogarty lost a 7-1 match against MSU’s Cody Quinn.
