St. Cloud State 30, Minnesota State 5

The #2 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (14-1, 6-0 NSIC) continued its unbeaten run in league play with a big 30-5 victory over #15 Minnesota State University (8-4, 4-2 NSIC) on Saturday, Feb. 6 in Mankato, Minn.

The Huskies opened the day with a pin fall victory by #1 Austin Goergen at 285-pounds, which improved his record to 26-1 this winter. The victories continued at 125-pounds for the Huskies with a 12-4 win by #1 Tim Prescott over MSU’s Trevor Schultz and then Jared Oftedahl posted a 13-0 major win over MSU’s Paul Selman at 133.

SCSU’s Taner Trembley lost a 7-3 decision at 141 for the Huskies before #5 Jay Hildreth earned a 9-4 win for the Huskies at 149. In one of the day’s upsets, SCSU’s Larry Bomstad charted a thrilling 13-7 victory over #2 ranked Matt Mincey of MSU at 157.

The wins continued for SCSU’s number one ranked Clint Poster at 165. He improved to 29-1 with a 17-4 victory over Brad Maas of MSU. At 174-pounds, #4 Clayton Jennissen lost a close 8-6 battle against #8 ranked Adam Cooling at 174.

The upset trend was reversed at 184-pounds as SCSU’s Uthman Rabiu scored a 3-1 victory over #8 ranked Scott VanDeLoo of MSU. In the final bout of the afternoon, SCSU’s V.J. Giulio won an 15-8 decision against MSU’s Darick Vancura at 197.

The Mavericks hit the road for their final two duals of the regular season, where they will face the Northern State Wolves on Thursday, February 11 and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, February 12.  Both duals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The Huskies will continue their season on Feb. 11 with a home match against Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. The match will be Youth/Middle School/Prep Night and MilitaryAppreciation Night at St. Cloud State University wrestling. The #2 ranked Huskies will host NSIC rival Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 in Halenbeck Hall. All youth in grades K-12 get into the match for just $1.

In addition, all members of the military and veterans will be admitted FREE to the match. Just show your military ID or papers and you get in FREE as appreciation for your service to our country!
