NYC Jail Where Epstein Died Had 'Serious Irregularities,' AG Says
NEW YORK — “Serious irregularities” have been uncovered at the Manhattan jail where the pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein apparently killed himself, U.S. Attorney General William Barr said Monday.
Speaking at a police conference in New Orleans, Barr fumed at the failure of Lower Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center to “adequately secure” Epstein as he awaited trial on sex-trafficking charges brought by federal prosecutors in Manhattan.
“We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation,” Barr said Monday. “… We will get to the bottom of what happened and there will be accountability.”
Epstein, a convicted sex offender, was not on suicide watch when he died despite making a possible attempt at killing himself just about two weeks earlier. A New York City medical examiner performed an autopsy on Epstein Sunday but is awaiting more information to determine what caused his death.
The jail where Epstein was found dead Saturday is run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It has been used to house high-profile criminals such as former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Joaquin Guzman, the drug lord known as El Chapo. Guzman said he was subjected to “cruel and inhumane” treatment at the lockup before he was sentenced to life in prison last month.

Federal prosecutors accused Epstein last month of sexually abusing dozens of girls at his luxurious Manhattan and Florida homes, paying them hundreds of dollars and getting them to recruit other victims. He pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and conspiracy charges.
The Brooklyn native who rubbed shoulders with the likes of President Donald Trump, former president Bill Clinton and the retail magnate Leslie Wexner had long faced allegations that he preyed on girls as sexual servants.
Epstein died less than a day after court documents unsealed as part of defamation case against his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, provided new details into what was reportedly happening inside Epstein’s homes.
Barr indicated that the Department of Justice would continue to investigate Epstein’s alleged crimes and anyone who played a role in them.
Prosecutors previously said that Epstein’s employees and associates helped facilitate his abuse or paid off his victims. Unsealed court documents alleged that Epstein sent an underage “sex slave” prominent figures including former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and ex-U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, which they denied, according to Bloomberg.
“This case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein,” Barr said. “Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. The victims deserve justice, and they will get it.”
