NXT Results (4/17): Buddy Murphy vs. Velveteen Dream, Johnny Gargano Speaks, Shayna Baszler vs. Kairi Sane, More
NXT is back this week with its usual high intensity and maximum action!
The program kicked off with perhaps the most charismatic Superstar on any WWE brand, facing a man that could be considered one of the company’s most underrated stars. As expected, this one delivered and then some!
THE VELVETEEN DREAM VS. BUDDY MURPHY, NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
This was indeed a clash of two different styles and characters, but there was a definite chemistry from the moment the opening bell rang. Murphy was not intimidated by Dream’s charisma or presence, both of which were non-factors in this bout.
Buddy controlled the tempo of this match and gave The Dream all he could handle. The former Cruiserweight champion proved why he has the respect of the fans and his peers alike. He was on the same level as The Velveteen Dream, who could not find a way to gain control of the match.
But The Dream persevered and eventually hit the Dream Valley Driver, followed ny the Purple Rainmaker off the top rope for the win.

WINNER AND STILL NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPION: VELVETEEN DREAM
Next up was a backstage vignette featuring The Street Profits and a brand new edition of Street Talk. The duo said that when someone wants something, they knock on the door and ask. So they decided to knock on NXT General Manager William Regal’s door. That door opened and The War Raiders came out, informing The Street Profits that both teams will face off next week on NXT.
The newly crowned NXT champion Johnny Gargano was out next, to a thunderous ovation from the Full Sail crowd. Johnny Wrestling grabbed the mic and said that he refused to take no for an answer in 2015, when WWE rejected him during his tryout.
But Gargano was interrupted by The Undisputed Era, led by Adam Cole, who said that Johnny got luck at Takeover: New York. Cole said that he had Gargano beat while the crowd chanted “you tapped out.” Cole then said that he was the uncrowned NXT champion and that Johnny was nothing more than a punk.

Gargano asked if there was trouble in Cole’s “little boy band.” Johnny reminded Cole that he tapped him out in the second fall and then pinned him in the third fall. Gargano said that victory was not just definitive, it was undisputed. Johnny wanted a fight in the middle of the ring and Cole came down the ramp, but was blindsided by Roderick Strong.
The Undisputed Era was on the attack, with all four men assaulting Gargano in the middle of the ring. Johnny Champion had no friends to help him out, as the quartet stood over him.
Former New Japan star Kushida’s recent signing was then covered and his official in-ring debut was announced for the May 1 edition of NXT.
DOMINIK DIJAKOVIC VS. AARON FRYE
This one was over before it even began, as Dijakovic hit a spinning kick to squash Frye and get the win. In a matter of seconds, Dominik won and then cut a promo after the match, stating his intentions of going after Velveteen Dream’s North American Championship.

The Undisputed Era was interviewed backstage but were interrupted by William Regal, who said that Gargano wants them in the ring. Cole assumed it was him, but Regal said that Johnny wanted Strong. The match was announced for the April 24 edition of NXT. Cole was obviously bothered by this, but it was not addressed during the segment.
Vanessa Borne and Aaliyah were then seen in a vignette, where they demanded Candice LeRae get a partner and face them next week on NXT.
SHAYNA BASZLER VS. KAIRI SANE, NXT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
The main event arrived with the champ and SmackDown Live’s newest star, as Baszler defended her title against Sane. If Sane lost the match, it would be her last opportunity at the NXT Women’s Championship.
Sane came out quick in this one, but was soon shut down by Baszler, who was flanked by Marina Shafire and Jessamyn Duke. Sane and Baszler delivered another one of their usual hard-hitting battles, with Sane giving as good as she received.
Baszler’s lower back became a problem, as the champ took an Insane Elbow from the top. Shayna sold the back for quite some time but then she took over on Kairi, targeting The Pirate Princess’s right arm. She kept after Sane, cinching her up in one tight hold after another, all in an effort to get Sane to tap out.
But. Kairi would not give up and eventually, she was assisted on the floor by a trainer, as well as Io Shirai. Baszler pulled Kaiir into the ring and threatened to stomp Sane’s injured arm but Io interfered and ultimately got Kairi disqualified.
Shayna then went after Sane’s arm, forcing Io to watch while Duke and Shafir held her back. The Horsewomen celebrated the attack, as Sane was attended to in the middle of the ring by Shirai and NXT officials.
