Nestlé Purina Recalls Rubber-Tainted Muse Cat Food Nationwide

NEW YORK, NY — Cat-owners beware — Nestlé Purina PetCare Company has issued a nationwide recall of one of its wet cat food products because the cans could contain rubber. The voluntary recall, announced Friday, applies to a limited amount of Muse wet cat food Natural Chicken Recipe in Gravy. The food comes in three-ounce cans.

The recall was “out of an abundance of caution,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration wrote in a recall notice. There have been no reports of cats suffering injuries or falling ill. The company learned of the issue when observant pet parents noticed rubber pieces in the food.

“The product could contain rubber pieces that are translucent yellow with a blue backing, which may present a potential choking hazard,” the notice said.

The company said it has made changes to its process to avoid any rubber contamination in the future. When asked what processes were changed, a spokeswoman for the company only said they implemented additional controls.

“We’re pet owners and pet lovers too and we only want products that meet our high quality standards in your cat’s bowl,” the company wrote in a Facebook post.

It wasn’t immediately clear which states received the food, but the products were shipped nationwide and available for purchase at pet specialty and e-commerce retailers. Retailers were asked to remove the affected products, which can be identified by the UPC, production code and “best by” date on the bottom of the can. The UPC code is 38100 17199 (single three-ounce can). The “best by” date is April 2020 and the production code is 80941162.

Those who bought a variety pack only have to worry about cans of Natural Chicken Recipe in Gravy.

Patch has reached out to Purina for comment and will update when we hear back.
