Ministers to discuss MFF
Updated budget proposals in the agenda.
Ministers for foreign or European affairs are to discuss an updated proposal from the European Commission on the European Union’s multi-annual financial framework (MFF), which covers the period 2014-20. The revisions are not expected to be controversial with the ministers, whose negotiations have focused on the size and relative weight of agricultural and cohesion spending. The ministers will resume negotiations at the end of August, when they will hold an informal meeting in Cyprus.
Earlier this month, the Commission presented an update to its initial MFF proposal from June 2011, to take into account the latest economic indicators and to add the cost of Croatia’s accession to the EU, estimated at €13.7 billion. Croatia, which is expected to join the EU in July 2013, will receive up to €8.7bn in cohesion funding, according to the revised draft. The overall ceiling for commitments for the seven-year period has been raised from €1,025bn in the initial proposal to €1,033 billion.
