Mexicans Abroad: Raul Jimenez rolls on with goals for Wolves

The forward has scored in his last three games with Wolverhampton, boosting his stock as Tata Martino prepares to call his first El Tri roster

Raul Jimenez, set to take over as El Tri’s top number 9 with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez on the wrong side of 30, is lighting it up in the Premier League. He’s scored in the last three matches for Wolves, with a goal against Shrewsbury Town last week in the FA Cup followed up by a two-goal day against Hernandez’s West Ham during the week and another goal this weekend against Everton.

He’s just one goal away from ticking into double-digits in the Premier League and also has five assists in league play. “With these results and all the confidence we have, we can be unstoppable,” Jimenez told reporters after the club’s third-straight league victory. His recent hot streak surely will have drawn the attention of new Mexico manager Tata Martino, who has a dearth of forwards he can call upon.

Chicharito came in as a substitute in the meeting with his countryman but didn’t register a shot. He still earned a start for the Hammers in Monday’s match with Liverpool, however, and did manage to test Alisson with a long-range effort. He earned a yellow card and made way in the 79th minute of the 1-1 draw.

In Spain, Nestor Araujo continued with his typical place as starting left center back for Celta de Vigo. It was a good week for Araujo, with his club snapping a five-match losing streak by beating Sevilla 1-0. Elsewhere in La Liga, Andres Guardado went all 90 minutes in midfield for Real Betis in a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid. Diego Lainez didn’t make the team for Betis. Diego Reyes wasn’t in Leganes’ squad, either, having only recently completed a loan move from Fenerbahce. Hector Moreno was in the team for Real Sociedad but played just two minutes as a substitute in a 2-1 derby victory over Athletic.

It was a rare week without Hirving Lozano for PSV as the star winger recovers from a head injury suffered last week. Erick Gutierrez came in for a 10-minute cameo as the league leaders stomped Fortuna Sittard 5-0 behind a Luuk de Jong hat trick.

Jesus “Tecatito” Corona and Hector Herrera each went the full 90 minutes for Porto this weekend, but neither could help find a winning goal. The Dragons slumped to a scoreless draw with Vitoria Guimaraes.

Things continue to go well in Belgium for Guillermo Ochoa. The Mexican was in goal for Standard Liege, which stayed in fourth place thanks to a 2-1 triumph over Anderlecht.
