Marseille “surprisingly optimistic” about signing William Saliba

L’Équipe are reporting that Marseille are “surprisingly optimistic” about their prospects of re-signing Arsenal’s William Saliba (21), who spent last season on loan at the club.

Marseille are undoubtedly keen on bringing the French international defender back to the Orange Vélodrome. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the club’s chances of signing Saliba were fading as the player has impressed Mikel Arteta during pre-season and is now considered an important part of the team.

There is also the issue of money. Luan Peres (28) looks like he could be set to join Fenerbahçe for €4.5m, but it was reported by La Provence that owner Frank McCourt “no longer wants to put his hands in his pocket” and that he was expecting the club to make more sales.

Despite this, Marseille president Pablo Longoria met up with the player’s agent earlier this week, still hoping to get a deal done for the player, who won Ligue 1 young player of the year whilst at the club last season. L’Équipe now report that the Marseille board “remain attentive to Saliba’s situation” and are “surprisingly optimistic” of a deal.
