Liam Williams: Veteran ruled out of Wales’ autumn Tests with a collarbone injury

Cardiff star Liam Williams has been ruled out of Wales’ autumn Tests with a collarbone injury suffered in his debut for the club.

Williams has undergone surgery after going off against Munster in round one of the 2022/2023 United Rugby Championship and will be sidelined for between 12 and 16 weeks, according to his club.

Missing crucial Tests

The injury will see the British and Irish Lion miss tests against New Zealand, Argentina, Georgia and Australia in November this year.

Coach Wayne Pivac will have to turn to Johnny McNicholl or Leigh Halfpenny to fill the void with the 2023 Rugby World Cup less than a year away.

A statement from Cardiff confirmed the injury to their new star, who looked promising in his first hit out in blue.

“Liam Williams underwent surgery last night after suffering a collarbone injury,” Cardiff said.

“The Wales and British and Irish Lions full-back had impressed on his Cardiff debut before damaging his shoulder in a tackle on the 20-minute mark.

“Williams now faces a recovery period of 12-16 weeks on the sidelines following surgery.”

The 31-year-old will be hoping to recover from his injury in time to make a charge for a third World Cup appearance for Wales, having made his Test debut in 2012.
