Leclerc open to real-world Le Mans outing

Two-time Grand Prix winner Charles Leclerc says his participation in last weekend’s virtual Le Mans 24 Hours has whet his appetite for a real-world experience in the endurance classic.

Leclerc shared an AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE in the online event with Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi and sim racers Enzo Bonito and David Tonizza.

Unfortunately, technical issues and server failure marred the quartet’s efforts but the struggles took nothing away from Leclerc’s enthusiasm for racing at Le Mans.

“Thanks for being with me during the whole 24 hours guys !!,” he wrote on Twitter.

“The first 8/9 hours were very fun battling for positions. After the server problem, it was more about finishing the race and that’s it but still fun.

“Now I just want to do the real Le Mans though.”

Tackling the legendary endurance event in the near future is unlikely to happen for Leclerc as the Monegasque focuses exclusively on his efforts with Ferrari in F1.

But racing twice around the clock at the Circuit de la Sarthe is certainly in the realm of possibilities at some point, and perhaps even with the Italian outfit as the Scuderia has taken an interest in the event’s new LMDh regulations that will be introduced in 2022.
