Juncker: Satire complaint pushes Turkey further from EU
Commission president ‘does not appreciate’ Turkey calling in German ambassador over satirical song.
Turkey’s decision to summon the German ambassador for a dressing down over a video mocking President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan did not go down well in Brussels, a spokeswoman for the European Commission said Wednesday.
Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker “does not appreciate” the Turkish foreign ministry’s decision to call in the ambassador “because of a satirical song,” spokeswoman Mina Andreeva said. “He believes this moves Turkey further from the EU rather than closer to us.”
German public broadcaster NDR aired a song mocking Erdoğan on the weekly satirical program “Extra 3″ on March 17. The two-minute video cuts together clips of Erdoğan meeting European leaders and protesters being beaten.
EU officials have been critical of Turkey’s human rights record and a government crackdown on independent media. Just before the EU struck a deal with Turkey on curbing the flow of migrants from its shores to the EU, authorities in Istanbul sized the largest opposition daily newspaper, Zaman. Two journalists — Can Dündar and Erdem Gül of the daily Cumhuriyet — have been put on trial on espionage charges.
