Ireland: Joey Carbery to train fully this week while Munster announce two new signings

Ireland have announced that Joey Carbery will train fully with the squad this week, allaying concerns over the shoulder injury he suffered on Saturday.

The fly-half was hurt while playing for Munster in their recent United Rugby Championship game against Leinster at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

But a statement released by the Irish Rugby Football Union on their website offered positive news on his fitness as Ireland prepares for the autumn.

Joey Carbery set to train

The squad met in Carton House on Monday and commenced preparations for the upcoming series at the IRFU High Performance Centre in Dublin.

While Carbery will train, his opponent last weekend, Leinster full-back Ciaran Frawley, will be “managed across the week”, according to the IRFU.

There was also news on the Ulster contingent of Robert Baloucoune, Michael Lowry, Stuart McCloskey, Tom O’Toole, Nick Timoney, James Hume, Rob Herring and Kieran Treadwell, who returned from South Africa. They will be managed over the coming days following the gastro outbreak experienced by the squad.

Elsewhere, versatile forward Tadhg Beirne (adductor), scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park (hamstring), full-back Hugo Keenan (abdomen) and wings Jacob Stockdale (ankle) and Calvin Nash (dead leg) will be reintegrated to training this week, which is good news as they look to shine ahead of the Autumn Nations Series.

Both tighthead prop Tadhg Furlong (ankle) and flanker Peter O’Mahony (neck) will complete their rehab programmes and train later in the week. Scrum-half Craig Casey (groin) and back-row Josh van der Flier (ankle) will continue their rehab this week, which hints they will miss their province’s upcoming URC games.

Injury-hit Munster sign duo

Speaking of this week’s matches involving Irish sides, Munster face Ulster and Connacht head to Ospreys on Saturday. Leinster play Scarlets on Friday.

Munster have announced the short-term signing of prop John Ryan, who returns to the province, and Irish-qualified centre Oli Norris from Worcester.

Norris has inked a deal until the end of the season as Munster battle to cope with a busy treatment table which includes Stephen Archer and Jean Kleyn.
