India Is Now 5th Deadliest Country In World For Doing Journalism, Afghanistan Tops List
The fourth pillar of democracy- the media is believed to act as the eyes and ears of a nation. By reporting about the government’s functioning and needs of the people, it acts as a mediator between the two.
However, in autocratic and monarchy settings if media reports the wrongdoings of the government in power, then it is strong-armed and the voices of those journalists are curbed. In recent years, journalists especially those in regional, or poverty stricken areas have met unfortunate fate as they were murdered by government officials, bureaucrats or fringe groups.
A study conducted by Reporters Without Borders reveals that Afghanistan is the worst country for journalists since 15 journalists were killed in the conflicted nation in 2018 alone.
