Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga called on European Commission Vice President Věra Jourová to resign Monday after calling Hungary an “ill democracy.”

“Mr Orbán likes to say that he is building an illiberal democracy,” the Commission vice president, a liberal Czech politician who holds the values and transparency portfolio, told Spiegel in an interview published Friday.

“I would say: he’s building an ill democracy,” Jourová said. The German-language interview transcript used the word krank, which can be translated as either sick or ill.

The European Commission is due to unveil a report that will for the first time assess the state of rule of law in each of the bloc’s 27 members — an exercize with the Hungarian government has already criticized.

Jourová “has to resign!” tweeted Varga, a member of Viktor Orbán’s government who holds both the justice and European affairs files.

“No democratic institution should tolerate a leader who uses such insults as she did in her Spiegel interview,” the minister said, adding that “defining Hungary as a sick democracy humiliates Hungarian people, contradicts European values and brings shame upon the @EU_Commission!”
