Goulard says she’ll ‘respect outcome’ of French probe, ‘regrets’ consulting work
French commissioner-designate faces tough hearing.
Internal market commissioner-designate Sylvie Goulard said Wednesday that she would “respect the outcome” of a French legal probe into the wages of an assistant she employed while serving as a member of the European Parliament.
Asked if she would resign from the European Commission if convicted in that probe, she said: “I will obviously respect that sort of outcome, but for now it is a hypothetical question.”
Goulard remains the focus of a probe in France about her parliamentary assistant.
“I hope with all my heart that I will be able to come out [of the situation] with my head held high and that if you grant me your confidence I will be able to work with you for five years,” she added.
The former French defense minister also came under fire during the hearing over her lucrative work for the Berggruen Institute, a think tank. Pressed on the contract, she said that she “regrets” the situation and “understands much better” why the money she earned “could have upset people.”
