GoFundMe Account Raises Millions For Trump's Border Wall

MIRAMAR BEACH, FL — Online crowdfunding is typically often used to raise money for emergency medical procedures, unexpected funeral costs and other dire situations. But one Florida man is using the strategy to raise money for a wall. Not just any wall — President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico.

Recently, Trump has threatened to partially shut down the federal government over Democrats’ refusal to provide funding for the enormous project. He initially told lawmakers he wouldn’t accept any amount below $5 billion, even as many estimates pit the cost at between $12 billion and $20 billion.

Brian Kolfage, 37, of Miramar Beach, wants to help.

Kolfage, who was severely wounded in the Iraq war, created a GoFundMe account and has raised more than $4 million to build the wall. His goal is to raise $1 billion, though he wants the site to increase its maximum amount available.

“If the 63 million people who voted for Trump each pledge $80, we can build the wall,” Kolfage said, according to a post on the crowdfunding page.

The post says most Trump voters liked him because he promised to “Make America Great Again.” That includes his main campaign promise to “BUILD THE WALL,” a project Democrats have vowed not to fund.

This money would change that, Kolfage hopes.

“We can do it, and we can help President Trump make America safe again,” the post said.

Kolfage is now trying to raise awareness of the crowdfunding effort. His Facebook page “GoFund The Wall” has amassed more than 50,000 followers and is scheduled to appeared on two Fox News segments Thursday.

The Associated Press reported earlier this year that Trump wants the wall to be 30 feet high. The wall should also look good from the north side and be tough to climb or cut through. The border is about 2,000 miles long. Existing fencing covers about 700 miles.

Kolfage attempted to dispel notions that the money ultimately wouldn’t go to the wall. He noted he’s using his real name, that way he can be held accountable. Furthermore, he said he is in talks with the Trump administration to secure a point of contact where all the money will go.

“We have many very high level contacts already helping,” the site said.

Lastly, he is working with attorneys to draft a legal document that will force the government to spend the money on the wall and nothing else, even promising to withhold the donations until all the legal aspects are settled. If the crowdfunding effort doesn’t approach the overall goal, all the money will be refunded, he said.
