The European Commission has appointed two officials to the post of deputy director-general.

Christos Ellinides is to become the deputy director-general for translation from 1 September. A Cypriot, he is by training a chartered engineer and information technology expert. He is currently a director in the Commission’s informatics department, responsible for digital workplace solutions.

His appointment will be seen as a recognition of the growing importance of ICT to the translation department’s work.

Jens Nymand-Christensen is to become deputy director-general for education and culture, where he will take responsibility for youth, sport, Erasmus+ and culture and creativity. He is currently a director in the Commission’s secretariat-general responsible for policy co-ordination. The date of his move has not been announced. Xavier Prats Monné is to move up from deputy director-general to become director-general for education and culture on 1 August. Nymand-Christensen, a former head of the Commission’s office in Copenhagen, will become only the second Dane at the level of director-general or deputy director-general level – the other being Claus Sørensen, head of ECHO, the humanitarian aid office.

James Morrison, who has headed the private office of Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign policy chief, since the days when she was the European commissioner for trade, has been appointed director in the Commission’s secretariat-general with responsibility for institutional and administrative policies. Morrison was previously a career diplomat with the UK’s foreign office, including a stint at the UK’s permanent representation to the EU.

Luis Riera Figueras, a Spaniard,  has been appointed director for human and society development in the Commission’s department for development and co-operation, with effect from 1 July. He is already doing the job in an acting capacity, with the rank of principal adviser. Androulla Kaminara, who is a principal adviser in the Commission’s communications department, will replace Riera Figueras as a principal adviser in the development and co-operation department from 1 July 2014. She has British, Greek and Cypriot nationality and joined the Commission in 1991 as a Briton. She was head of the Commission’s delegation in Cyprus in  2008-12 and earlier worked in the private offices of Poul Nielsen, the European commissioner for development co-operation, and Christos Papoutsis, the European commissioner for energy.
