Denny's Waitress Accused Of Leaving Kids In Hot Car

BRADENTON, FL — A 35-year-old Denny’s waitress in Florida was accused of leaving her two young children in a hot car for at least 15 to 20 minutes on the same day that 2-year-old Noah Sneed’s lifeless body was found in a hot day care van in another part of the state.

Andrea Michelle Cole was charged with child neglect and resisting arrest when Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered Cole’s 7-week-old infant and 2-year-old boy sitting in a parked car in the driveway of Cole’s home Monday as the temperature reached 93 degrees outside with a heat index of 102.

Arrest documents said the infant was “unresponsive” for a time while the older child was crying and showed signs of heat exhaustion.

“Inside the vehicle was loose medication, opened bottles of liquor and used diapers,” arrest documents said. Deputies noted that the mother appeared to be “heavily intoxicated and she had no idea that she left her children in the car and could not answer our questions.”

Deputies said they were on the scene for at least 15 to 20 minutes before they spotted the children on the same day that Sneed died outside his day care center in Oakland Park, Florida.

Since 1990, more than 900 children have died in hot cars, including 97 in Florida, according to national statistics. Of those children, four have died this year, including the child in Oakland Park, which is close to Fort Lauderdale.

“The vehicle was not running, in the direct sunlight and all but one window rolled up, the vehicle was parked in the front yard for an unknown amount of time prior to our arrival,” arrest documents said in the case of the Manatee County incident.

The documents said Cole’s children were taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital for treatment while Cole was taken into custody.

One of the deputies said they went into the home to find diapers and baby formula for the children, who had what deputies described as numerous bites or sores. The deputy found that the refrigerator door had been propped open and all of the food inside was warm to the touch.

“When I entered the home, I observed it to be filthy with trash strewn about the floor and within reach of the 2-year-old, Jack,” arrest documents said. “I also observed trash and soiled diapers on the couch and every tabletop.

“I observed empty liquor bottles and soda cans strewn about the home and floor, but observed no edible food for the infant or the 2-year-old,” the documents said.
