The Wednesday Night War began, with AEW Dynamite debuting on TNT opposite a stacked episode of NXT on USA. SmackDown made its move to FOX two days later and featured an appearance by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a WWE Championship change, and the debut of Cain Velasquez. Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view looked like it was only going to be a footnote, but the main event made the show memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Here’s a look at three stories that defined the week:
1. AEW wins first night of Wednesday night ratings war
Pro wrestling returned to TNT last Wednesday as the premiere of AEW Dynamite averaged 1.409 million viewers. That topped the 891,000 viewers that NXT averaged. In the 18-49 demo, AEW posted a 0.68 rating — second for the night on cable and more than double what NXT did.

SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE.com now officially lists Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez at Crown Jewel as being a WWE Championship match. Lesnar’s title being on the line wasn’t mentioned at yesterday’s press conference and wasn’t initially noted in WWE.com’s article. Michael Cole also said on last night’s SmackDown that it would be a title match.
An hour-long pre-show will air live on the WWE Network, WWE.com, the WWE App, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Twitch.before Crown Jewel on October 31. The show is taking place at King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the pre-show starting at noon Eastern time.
Velasquez, Triple H, and Tyson Fury spoke to the media after yesterday’s press event.
The “preliminary draft pools” on WWE.com have been changed to alphabetical order after last night’s picks nearly exactly followed the order they were originally listed in on the website.

Heavy Machinery were listed in the night two draft pool but were picked by SmackDown on night one.
Kevin Owens tweeted this morning: “Last night, the @WWE digital team asked me for my thoughts after I was drafted to #Raw. I gave them a very honest, heartfelt answer. They decided not to post the footage because I appeared to be angry. I was angry. I still am. Round 3…Looks like I still have lots to prove.”
WWE Network News reported that a new episode of Ride Along will air on the WWE Network after Raw on Monday. It will feature Maria & Mike Kanellis in one car and Braun Strowman, EC3 & Drake Maverick in the other as they head to Madison Square Garden.
Kushida posted a picture of his arm in a cast and wrote: “Ouch! Rebuild and come back to the ring soon Thank you everyone.” In NXT’s storyline injury report, he’s listed as day-to-day with a wrist injury.
Chris Bey appeared as an enhancement wrestler on last night’s 205 Live and faced Ariya Daivari.
In a video on Xavier Woods’ UpUpDownDown YouTube channel, Becky Lynch, Roman Reigns, Ric Flair, and Adam Cole reacted to WWE 2K20 ratings.
Goldberg appeared on SEC Nation today ahead of the University of Georgia’s loss to South Carolina.

Jushin Thunder Liger tweeted about the NJPW dojo being flooded due to Typhoon Hagibis. Togi Makabe also posted pictures of flooding on the first floor.
Takaaki Kidnai wrote that everything is safe at the dojo (rough translation via Google Translate): “The New Japan Pro-Wrestling Dojo, which is worried by professional wrestling fans, is all safe from the scene. However, it was said that the appliances and some appliances on the first floor were damaged because partly flooded up to the second floor. Thank you for your concern. Please take care of everyone.”
Dragon Lee has been announced for four ROH shows next month: The Experience in Pittsburgh on November 2, Unauthorized in Columbus on November 3, Survival of the Fittest night one in Dallas on November 9, and Survival of the Fittest night two in San Antonio on November 10.

Conor McGregor appeared in court yesterday in the case where he’s charged with assaulting a man at a Dublin pub. The case was adjourned to November 1, when McGregor will be “asked to enter a plea or seek a date for the case to be heard.”
Dana White claimed that there was never an issue where Joanna Jedrzejczyk wouldn’t be able to make weight for tonight’s fight against Michelle Waterson.
Kamaru Usman spoke about Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal: “Let’s be honest, on the promotional side, I think they dropped the ball in getting my fight done, because that was the fight that should be at [Madison Square Garden]. They dropped the ball getting that fight done, so they have to create something to sell a fight. I mean look at those two guys, let’s be honest, these two guys have over 20 losses combined. Twenty losses. How you call yourself a ‘BMF’ and you’ve got 20 losses combined? A baddest motherf*cker alive is a guy no one can touch. You’ve got 20 losses, sit yo ass down, you’re not a bad motherf*cker.”
