This year’s SummerSlam main event was a pivotal moment in the career of Seth Rollins.
If that wasn’t made clear going into the pay-per-view, it certainly felt true in the moment. As much as headlining a Big Four PPV is a huge spot for anyone, Rollins’ match against Brock Lesnar came at a time when Rollins was at a tipping point. He could either win and regain his momentum — or his character would probably have to go in a different direction.
With how WWE built to their match, Rollins winning was the right outcome. He had been viciously beaten down by Lesnar in angles on Raw each of the last two weeks. After the second attack, a subdued Rollins vowed to be at SummerSlam and guaranteed that he would defeat Lesnar.
Rollins came through on his guarantee. After hitting his third curb stomp of the match, Rollins pinned Lesnar to regain the Universal title. The match delivered on a much higher level than Rollins’ previous bouts against Lesnar. Rollins was put over strongly and positioned as the current top babyface in the company.

FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE
– Notable for tomorrow’s Cormier vs. Miocic heavyweight title fight is that both are fighting about ten pounds lighter than they fought at last year. Given they are heavyweights and nether cut weight, it would indicate both are coming in better condition and anticipating a stamina battle. The lighter weight does affect punching power and to a degree, the ability to withstand a punch as well. At media day, Cormier talked about his career coming to a close.
– Leon “Tarzan” Baxter, who was one of the leading stars in the Gulf Coast during the 70s as The Wrestling Pro, passed away Thursday at the age of 81. Baxter wrestled from 1960 to 1982, and from 1969 to 1977 was largely a headliner in a number of different companies including holding the North American championship for Leroy McGuirk. But his biggest success was as The Wrestling Pro, a top heel who won countless championships on the Gulf Coast.

– For the weekend, AJ Styles is not advertised for any of the Raw house shows. Braun Strowman is not advertised tonight but he is working on Saturday and Sunday. The Raw talent advertised for the Super Show in Houston is Sami Zayn, Strowman, Samoa Joe, Drew McIntyre, Becky Lynch and Lacey Evans. The reset of the Raw crew is advertised for Grand Forks, ND that same night. Joe is advertised in both places. He will not be in both places.
– The location of the third and fourth AEW TV shows for 10/23 and 10/30 will be announced on Monday and tickets will be put on sale for those shows before the end of the month.
– The CMLL World Grand Prix takes place on 8/30 at Arena Mexico. It’s a 16-man tournament over one night. Names announced so far are Soberano Jr., Rush, Forastero, Volador Jr., Cavernario, Dragon Lee, Diamante Azul and Negro Casas.

Jack Gallagher and Akira Tozawa have been announced as Oney Lorcan’s first two partners for the five-on-five Captain’s Challenge match on Tuesday’s 205 Live. Ariya Daivari and Mike Kanellis will be teaming with Drew Gulak.
UFC
Jose Aldo is talking about moving to 135 pounds and challenging Henry Cejudo. Aldo used to have trouble making 145.
MISCELLANEOUS
First round matches for the Jim Lyman Memorial tournament that AAW is running the weekend of All Out in Chicago were announced. On 8/29, which is a Thursday at the Logan Square Auditorium, they have Jake Atlas vs. Jacob Fatu, MJF vs. Colt Cabana, Laredo Kid vs. Ace Austin, Trey Miguel vs. Myron Reed, Jimmy Jacobs vs. Eddie Kingston, Jake Something vs. Josh Alexander, Curt Stallion vs. Joey Lynch and Ace Romero vs Willie Mack. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals are on 8/30 in the same building, which is sold out.

A pro wrestling vs. MMA battle on Celebrity Family Feud airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC. The pro wrestling team features the Bella Twins and Daniel Bryan, as well as two other members of the family, against Ryan Bader, Ilima-lei Macfarlane, Tyron Woodley, Randy Couture, and Chuck Liddell.
LFA has the final match of its heavyweight title tournament on 9/27 in Prior Lake, MN with Daniel James (9-3-1) vs. Brett Martin (7-1). The show airs live on AXS. Calyn Hull (6-1) vs. Chad Johnson (5-1) is the semi, also a heavyweight bout.
LFA on 10/4 in Broomfield, CO at the 1st Bank Centerhas Brandon Royval (9-4) vs. Jerome Rivera (8-2) for the flyweight championship.
Alex Shelley vs. Austin Aries has been added to the loaded Warrior Wrestling show on 9/1 in Chicago Heights, IL.
