CA Wildfires Latest: 25 Dead; 174K Acres Burn, 250K Evacuate

The deadly California wildfires, fueled by strong winds and dry weather, have once again ripped through the Golden State killing at least 25 people, charring almost 175,000 acres, and destroying thousands of buildings. Hundreds of thousands of residents have been evacuated. Thousands of firefighters are working to battle the relentless flames of the three major fires.

The smoke and ash from the fires has made it hard to breathe and prompted air quality warnings across the state. Extreme fire conditions persist and fire officials ask residents to remain vigilant.

“If you see fire approaching, don’t wait to be told to leave,” Cal Fire said in a statement.

The Camp Fire started around 6:30 a.m. Thursday in Butte County, near Chico. By Thursday evening, the fire charred 20,000 acres and was zero percent contained. The deadly blaze has killed at least 23 people and has exploded to 100,000 acres, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. It is about 20 percent contained as of Saturday morning.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, the Hill Fire sparked in Southern California, in the Ventura County area. That blaze is about 25 percent contained. It has now burned more than 4,500 acres, according to Ventura County Fire. Evacuation orders in effect.

Hill Fire: Scorches 4,500 Acres, Containment Grows

The Woosley Fire erupted Thursday afternoon in Ventura County. The 70,000-acre fire has zero percent containment as of Saturday morning. The blaze has destroyed at least 150 homes. More than 200,000 residents in Los Angeles and Ventura counties have evacuated due to the fire. On Saturday, officials said at a press conference that two people were found dead in the fire area in Malibu.
