BWI: Hazmat Investigation Focused On Baggage Claim

LINTHICUM, MD — A suspicious material at BWI drew first responders on New Year’s Day, according to a statement from the airport. There was no danger, officials ultimately determined.

The possibly hazardous material was found in the baggage claim, BWI reported before 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1.

BWI Fire and Rescue crews responded to the report along with law enforcement and emergency officials from area agencies.

Multiple travelers had been feeling ill in the baggage claim area, WJZ reported.

The investigation revealed that there was nothing dangerous found, according to BWI, and as a result, the scene was cleared.

Flights were not impacted by the incident, BWI reported.

The hazmat probe came days after a jetway collapse at the airport Saturday night sent six people to area hospitals. That case was determined to have stemmed from a defective metal bracket, according to USA Today, which said that the airport pans to replace six brackets from the manufacturer.
