Brett Pfarr Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week
Pfarr’s 3-0 performance last weekend at Gopher Duals earned him the weekly conference honor
The Big Ten today announced that Minnesota’s Brett Pfarr was named the conference’s Wrestler of the Week. Pfarr becomes the first Gopher to earn the award since Scott Schiller last November. Coincidentally, Pfarr moved up from 184 pounds to 197 this season, filling the spot vacated when Schiller graduated last spring.
Pfarr captured the Wrestler of the Week award after a 3-0 performance in the Gopher Duals last Saturday at Williams Arena. After a major decision over Austin Guan (Grand Canyon) to start the event, Pfarr knocked off ranked wrestlers in the next two duals, beginning with a decision over No. 11 Zach Nye (Virginia), followed by a major decision over No. 16 Nate Rotert (South Dakota State). In both cases, the Gophers were trailing in the dual entering Pfarr’s match, and his victory gave Minnesota a lead it would not relinquish.
With his wins last weekend, Pfarr is now 6-0 overall this season, including 3-0 against ranked competition. In its most recent rankings (Tues., Nov. 10), InterMat ranks Pfarr No. 6 in the country at 197 pounds.
Pfarr and the Gophers (3-0) travel to Troy, N.Y. this weekend for the Northeast Duals. On Sunday morning, Minnesota will wrestle No. 5 Lehigh, No. 12 N.C. State and No. 13 North Carolina in a trio of duals.
