Austria election analysis: Sebastian Kurz must resist forming another alliance with far-Right

The weekend’s elections in Austria were a shock for Europe’s resurgent far-Right. The Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ), a trailblazer and the first in a new wave of far-Right parties to force its way into power two years ago, suffered a heavy defeat.

Like Matteo Salvini’s Lega in Italy, it is out of power. And unlike, Mr Salvini, it faced humiliation at the ballot box.

It was a crushing victory for Sebastian Kurz, the conservative former chancellor,  who emerges from the elections strengthened and is set to resume his role as the world’s youngest leader with his choice of coalition partner. 

But the vote was also a damning indictment of his two-year coalition with the Freedom Party — and a signal…
