Apple Valley wrestler Gable Steveson carving out his own identity

It is not being over-dramatic to say that Gable Dan Steveson was born to be a wrestler.

While pregnant with her second son, his mother, Laticia Steveson, attended a wrestling tournament at which she kept hearing the name Dan Gable.

“She was, like, ‘Why not name him Gable?’ ” Steveson said.

That name belonged to perhaps the biggest name in American wrestling history. As a wrestler, Dan Gable lost only one match through high school and college — in his final match at Iowa State — and won a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Germany.
