Amo wins the regional title after day two of the NCAA Super Region 3 Championship

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana University sophomore Aero Amo won the Super Region Three 184-pound championship in front of a home crowd at the Elmen Center on Sunday afternoon. Amo qualified for the NCAA National Championships for the first time in his career and will be Augustana’s lone representative at the 2015-16 NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls March 11-12.

Amo started the day with a win over Upper Iowa’s Dustin Westerlund with a first period pin. Amo scored the takedown late in the period and turned Westerlund over to gain the fall with one second left in the period.

In the championship match, Amo defeated Uthman Rabiu of St. Cloud State by a 4-2 decision. Rabiu got a takedown early in the match to gain an early lead, but Amo quickly escaped to cut the lead to 2-1. Amo then scored a takedown late in the third to take a 3-2 lead before earning his fourth point with advantage time.

Senior Tim Weber placed sixth for the Vikings at 174 pounds. Weber started the day defeating Colby Vance from Upper Iowa by way of a 7-4 decision. Weber got a reversal and takedown in the second period to gain a 4-0 lead. Weber then scored a takedown in the third period to secure the decision victory.

In his second match of the day, Weber lost a 5-3 decision to Adam Cooling of Minnesota State.

In the last match of the day Weber lost to Kyle Begin from Southwest Minnesota State by a 4-2 decision. Weber scored a takedown early in the first to gain the advantage. Begin tied the match in the second period, then got a takedown to get the victory.

David Potratz (133 Pounds) lost his only match of the day to Naquan Henry from McKendree by a 10-8 decision. Potratz was down 7-0 after the second period but made a valiant comeback with a takedown and a couple of cautions from Henry but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

Michael Lowman (285 Pounds) lost by a 6-2 decision to Cole Wilson from Southwest Minnesota State.

Clayton Wahlstrom (197 Pounds) lost by way of an 8-4 decision to Darick Vancura from Minnesota State.

Brandon Charbonneau (141 Pounds) would lose to Matt Nelson from St. Cloud State by way of an 8-3 decision.

Mitch Rechtzigel (165 Pounds) lost in the consolation bracket to Qiante Wagner from McKendree by a 16-7 major decision.

The wrestling team racked up 36 points at the Super Region 3 Championship for a ninth place finish.

2016 NCAA Division II Super Region III Qualifier Results

The NCAA Championship will be held in Sioux Falls, S.D. at the Denny Sanford Premier Center on March 11-12.
