NJPW Announces ‘Super J-Cup 2019’ To Take Place Exclusively In America
New Japan Pro-Wrestling has officially announced the return of the Super J-Cup, one of the promotion’s most exciting (albeit infrequent) events.
The Super J-Cup is a single-elimination style tournament featuring some of the best junior heavyweight wrestlers from around the world. It dates back to the inaugural tournament in 1994, which was called “the most incredible single night of wrestling ever” by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. This will only be the 7th incarnation of the event ever, and the first once since 2016.

This year the tournament takes place across three days, featuring 16 wrestlers, and for the first time ever will be exclusive to the United States! The first round will take place on Aug. 22nd at the Temple Theater in Tacoma, WA, the second round on Aug. 24th at the SFSU Student Life Events Center in San Francisco, which leaves the semifinals and the finals for Aug. 25th in a return to the Walter Pyramid in Los Angeles.
The legendary Jushin Thunder Liger will produce the tour. Tickets go on sale Monday, June 24th at 3PM ET.
The timing comes at a rare off-period for NJPW as it kicks off 10 days after the G1 Climax Finals, wrapping up a nearly month-long tour, and 10 days before the start of the Road to Destruction tour.
