Didier Drogba has signed a deal to play for and co-own a team in North America’s second tier
Still, it’s a marketable city and Major League Soccer, the elite tier of the continent’s football pyramid, knows that too. It’s why Phoenix is in contention to become an MLS team in the near future.
Earlier this year, it submitted its application to be considered for expansion. But, so did eleven other franchises from around the United States.
Phoenix have upped the ante in recent months, however. And that’s hardly a coincidence. They signed well-known former Mexico and MLS player Omar Bravo and ex-Manchester City, Chelsea and England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips prior to announcing Drogba’s arrival.
But, this season is crucial for Drogba and his new employers. Attendances and results need to be impressive if his dreams of becoming owner of an MLS franchise are to come true. Toward the end of his 18-month stint with Montreal Impact, Drogba wasn’t first-choice anymore and his influence faded. He’ll hope for something better with Phoenix.
Otherwise, the relationship may come to an end sooner rather than later.
