The Ariel AG 55 won our women’s backpack test. Reviewer Kelly Bastone wrote that “the Ariel is a feature-rich, versatile pack that presents a case study in how a sturdy, weight-bearing suspension design is often more comfortable than a design that shaves ounces by way of flimsier built-in support.”

This is the backpack of choice for gear editor Emily Reed. She finds the 46-liter size perfect for up to two-night backpacking trips. The men’s version, the Kestrel, is also on sale.

The Manta AG 36 remains relatively unchanged from when we featured it in our 2016 Summer Buyer’s Guide. And that’s a good thing. It boasts Osprey’s signature mesh back panel, which allows for excellent airflow, and testers appreciated its seemingly endless ability to carry copious amounts of gear. They wrote, “With a cavernous main compartment, two exterior pockets, and a stuff pouch, the Manta can swallow enormous quantities of gear, ballooning outward for day trips or even spare overnighters.”

Designed for bikers and decked out with functional storage, the Raptor 14 features a stretch-mesh front compartment that’s large enough for spare layers, a riding jacket, a packed lunch, and other bulky items. Zippered hip-belt pockets offer handy access to riding snacks and trail nutrition, and they accommodate smaller must-have items. Looking for a women’s-specific pack? The 14-liter Raven is also on sale.
